Defender clone ported to RISC OS

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 13:49, 1/10/2001 | ,

One of my top five fave Acorn Electron games of all time was Guardian, a Defender clone with enjoyably slick keyboard handling allowing the player to slide around the landscape pulling off cool shoot and catch manoeuvres. Now Michael Foot (no, not the ex-MP or the SOE historian) has ported it to RISC OS, which should lead to many a lost work hour in Acorn Arcade Towers. Michael's previous work includes ports of Dare Devil Denis, Chuckie Egg and Dungeon, and long may he continue to bring these retro classics to a new audience.

Download your own copy from Mike's website.

Unregistered user You don't know how many times I've been asked to port Elite-A! I think a port of Elite: The New Kind would be somewhat easier.
The Guardian port was done to accompany an article in the last issue of the RISC OS Foundation newsletter/CD-ROM. One of the reasons I chose it was because I loved the game on the BBC.
As you say, the look and feel are the same as the original, however the sound is not. It's not easy converting a BBC style ENVELOPE to RISC OS without using a sound sample.

Unregistered user IIRC the BBC emulator's sound module could emulate ENVELOPE commands; you may be able make use of that.

Alternatively I've been working on a sound player that could easily have an ENVELOPE emulator added to it, if I ever get round to fixing the bugs that a new feature has caused.

Unregistered user I'm sure I checked that I hadn't posted already after I'd got disconnected mid-post...
