From Wired, dating from 1996:

http://yoz.com/wired/2.09/features/acorn.html

Nice coverage of the NC. I have a couple of these at home, which I have yet to get working. The article mentions the ANT suite being used to provide Web access - I had thought that Acorn's own Browse was the NC browser.

Astounding that in these days of Sky Plus and similar services, Acorn could have failed so badly with the pioneering technology they were experimenting with.

There's also a highly cringe-worthy bit exactly half-way through the article which seems to be increasinly common. Spotting this is an exercise for the reader.

And here's the front cover. I should have the physical mag somewhere, too.

Must re-read this, then... anything to do with the System 1?

My guess would be the use of "RISCOS".

Is it not the "sonsultancy", then?

I don't know if it is the cringeworthy bit, but I had a "hmmm" moment when it referred to Sophie designing the System One... "a comp science graduate when female comp sci graduates were rare". I suppose the statement is literally true, but the implied/intended meaning is somewhat wide of the mark. Plus, why bring gender into it at all?

I played around with a few NC bits, back in the day. The first product was roughly RISC OS 3.6 with something called NCFresco - essentially a full-screen instance of Fresco, which supported tables and frames. Interesting, since at the time, ANT suggested that they needed the nested Wimp to implement frames in desktop Fresco...

From what I remember, there were rough edges. I think Acorn had a head-start with their existing technology, but once other players got involved, they were overtaken. There were 'gen 2' NC devices floating around based on Intel chips and running variants of NetBSD.
