Hi.

In a recent article on The Register one of the commenters claimed that Acorn hardware was sold to schools on a 'half of RRP' basis, and that implies that the non-education price was essentially twice what it should have been.

Is this true?

Or they gave bulk purchase discounts to schools in order to try and hold onto their BBC-era education market monopoly.

I don't believe this is true, I was involved in trying to getting the Archimedes approved for use in Essex schools and at no point was any discount offered.

In the end the LEA refused to back them, and Essex went with RM Nimbus, which were substantially cheaper.

A mate of mine worked in sales for RM in the late '90s. He didn't see much hope for RISC OS and, last I heard, was surprised to hear it's still around. To offer some small consolation, he was working in the North rather than in Essex, so at least he didn't personally muscle in there.
