Information viewable on Companies House now list RISCOS Ltd's status as;

"Active - Proposal to Strike off"

They're also 3 months behind delivering their accounts for 2012. Well I guess that finalises the OS forking issue.

The fine for this late filing is more than is estimated to be in their bank account.

When is their return due? Not filing that on time is a criminal offence, rather than simply something that causes a fine.

Can anyone get the source code off them before they disappear completely? What happens to the copyright if (when) they fold?

Reading Justin's blog reminds me how much excellent stuff is being lost. In fact, every time I use RO5 it reminds me :-(

My assumption is one of:
- the body of shareholders will own it, and they will need to argue amongst themselves about it
- Given the company will close in debt, any assets (such as software IP) will need to be sold off to settle them.

If the second happens, I'll open the bidding to buy all source code created by ROL at 50 pence.

Next Return Due: 02/02/2013

What do you think the odds are of someone being able to buy all their IP before they are struck off?

I'm imagining a consortium of Microsoft, Apple and other dodgy, desperate dinosaurs rushing in at the last minute and paying billions for it. laugh

To be honest, that isn't a horrible idea, especially given the stuff that Justin's blog has mentioned.

And, it's not like the source is worth much of anything commercially. I mean, I could probably give them my pocket lint and win the bidding.

It may not be worth much commercially, but it's probably worth quite a bit in terms of man-hours when it comes to ROOL contributors wasting time by reimplementing ROL's features. Being able to take ROL's changes directly (even if it's only a small percentage, due to licensing or whatever) could be a significant time saver.

Perhaps ROOL could merge/take over/buy out/(insert appropriate technical business term here) ROL and put everything back into one...

CTL already own a significant portion of ROL.

Rumors say that Castle has the old "Pace Micro Technology plc" shares in ROL and probably is the largest shareholder with about 25% of the votes.

My point is that the low commercial value likely means it'll be inexpensive to get it (I mean, who other than CTL/ROOL would want it?), not that it isn't of value at all.

I'm a RISCOS Ltd Shareholder, exdirector and buyer of licences from RISCOS Ltd
Along with others I'm discussing the way forward for RISCOS Ltd with Paul Middleton.

Appropriate parties and the public will be informed when appropriate.
Wild speculation might be amusing but isn't normally helpful!

Filing annual accounts on time in order to not be charged a fine that is more than they have in the bank would be helpful. As would not risking criminal offences by being late with their annual return; it's very close to being due.

They should just split up the remaining couple of hundred quid it has been estimated they have and give it back to the shareholders, and donate any ROL-owned sources to ROOL, and be done with.

(I've been in contact with some of the shareholders I know, and they've heard nothing from Paul.)

Quote from 2004:
Another interesting point is a comment made recently by Castle COO Peter Wild: "I would say one of the biggest problems with the shareholders of RISC OS Ltd is actually finding any kind of common opinion among them which is one of the big difficulties in moving anything forward."

Companies House has added a First Gazette for the 29th to ROL’s filing history. I don’t realistically see how they can come back from the brink, at least in any useful capacity.

Nice quote, from here:

http://www.drobe.co.uk/features/article.php?id=1122&nc=13

He was wrong. Castle was very successful at creating a common opinion among the shareholders at the meeting, at least all the shareholders who weren't Castle.

There are getting on for over a thousand comments on the subject in various places spanning nearly a decade: 132 on the Drobe article you quoted from, 197 on http://www.iconbar.com/articles/What_is_the_point_of_RISCOS_Ltd/index1237.html, the threads "Help with rights holders" and "RISC OS Licencing : Facts not Fiction" on comp.sys.acorn.misc have 494 and 323, respectively. I'm sure I've missed some.

Please, let's not do that again.

I'm sure we could find something suitably boring and off-topic to discuss, but where's the fun in that?

Wow, non sequitur. Who said that was fun? Get off your high-horse. These are discussion groups for RISC OS and RISC OS users. Doing what you ask and *not* discussing the failure of RISCOS Ltd. would be ludicrous.

OK, fair enough, nobody said it was fun, but nobody seems to be very upset about it, either. It's seen as a solution to the fork problem, and their work has been worth 50p or pocket lint (but also worth having to pick the bones of).

We still don't have to return to the arguments about licensing which, like I said, have been warmed over often enough already.

AFAICT, the only person on this thread to mention anything to do with the old licencing discussions is you. Everybody else has been talking about saving the work they did.

An eight year old quote from Castle's COO suggesting it was the ROL shareholders' fault that things weren't moving forward is not about saving the work the company did.
